Last week marked the largest NRMP Match in history, which included more than 52,400 residency applicants competing for 43,237 positions. It was also a historic match for osteopathic applicants, as a record 8,392 U.S. DO seniors participated in the NRMP Match this year, an increase of 4.5 percent from 2024. Additionally, DO seniors had a 92.6% match rate, which is a record-high for osteopathic residency placements. This year’s record match rate for DO seniors is an increase of 0.3 percent from 2024 and an increase of 3.5 percent from 2021. The top five specialties that DO seniors matched into this year are: 1) internal medicine (categorical), 2) family medicine, 3) emergency medicine, 4) pediatrics (categorical) and 5) psychiatry. A chronic lack of investment in primary care has undermined the system’s ability to meet rising patient needs. This year's Scorecard report calls for urgent policy changes and strategic investments to rebuild primary care and reverse its downward spiral.
