We need your help NOW to improve healthcare in rural and underserved communities. On February 6, U.S. Representatives Carol Miller (R-WV) and Annie Kuster (D-NH) introduced the Community TEAMS Act, H.R. 7258. Through a new HRSA grant program, H.R. 7258 will allow medical schools to partner with FQHCs, RHCs and other healthcare facilities located in medically underserved communities to increase medical school clinical rotations in rural and underserved areas. Support increased funding for community-based training opportunities for medical students by urging your Members of Congress to sponsor or cosponsor the bill!
Why we need the Community TEAMS Act (H.R. 7258):
- Increases clinical rotation sites.
- MORE THAN 75 PERCENT of medical schools report concerns about the number of clinical training sites, especially in primary care.
- Supports medical student training where healthcare happens.
- 80 PERCENT of all hospital admissions occur outside academic hospitals, yet only 20 percent of physician training happens there.
- Increases physician training and practice in rural and underserved areas leading to greater healthcare access.
- 60 PERCENT of osteopathic medical schools are located in health professional shortage areas.
- 64 PERCENT of colleges of osteopathic medicine require clinical rotations in rural and underserved areas.
- 43 PERCENT of graduating 2021-2022 osteopathic medical students intend to practice in underserved communities.
