To increase the physician workforce in rural areas, Senators Jon Tester (D-MT) and John Barrasso (R-WY) and Representatives Diana Harshbarger (R-TN) and Kim Schrier (D-WA) introduced the Rural Physician Workforce Production Act (S. 230/H.R. 834). This bipartisan bill will:
- Lift residency caps that disadvantage rural hospitals
- Extend equitable federal funding to rural hospitals for residency training and
- Allow Medicare to reimburse urban hospitals that send residents to train in rural healthcare facilities.
Expanding rural residency training is critical to addressing our nation’s physician shortage and to ensuring that students can study and train in rural communities. - Robert A. Cain, DO, AACOM President and CEO
The Rural Physician Workforce Production Act would improve access to healthcare and bolster the physician workforce in rural communities throughout our country. Urge Congress to cosponsor and pass S. 230/H.R. 834 today!
