- On November 7, 2023, in a bipartisan vote of 62-36, the Senate confirmed Dr. Monica Bertagnolli as director of the NIH. From rural Wyoming, she will be the second woman confirmed as permanent director in NIH history and will oversee 27 research institutes and a budget of more than $49 billion.
- Dr. Bertagnolli was nominated by President Biden in May 2023. She served as director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) since October 2022, pushing for collaborative cancer prevention and treatment research.
- Dr. Bertagnolli will replace Dr. Lawrence Tabak, who served as acting director since Director Francis Collins stepped down in December 2021.
