- More than three weeks after the House ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as Speaker, 220 House Republicans finally coalesced around Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the new Speaker of the House. Prior to the October 25, 2023, vote, no Speaker nominee was able to reach the threshold of 217 votes.
- In the interim, the House came to a grinding halt without a Speaker and was unable to pass any bills, including emergency funding or appropriations even with a looming continuing resolution expiration on November 17, 2023.
- Speaker Mike Johnson was first elected to the House in 2016 and served as the chair of the Republican Study Committee before being elected in 2021 as vice chair of the House Republican Conference.
