This month the AOGME Board welcomed two new Council Representative members. Oliver Hayes, DO, MPH, associate dean for graduate medical education at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine in Las Cruces, New Mexico, will serve as Chair of the Collegium of Fellows for the 2023–2025 term (non-voting member of the AOGME Board). Linda Logan, DO, PGY-4 combined anatomic and clinical pathology at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, will serve as Chair of the Residents & Fellows Council (RFC) for the 2023–2025 term. Earlier this month the full AOGME Board met in person for its annual AOGME Board Retreat to review and discuss the strategic framework, mission, goals and objectives of the assembly. We hope to share these with you soon and seek your ideas and expertise as we work to execute key initiatives.

Call for Proposals for the 2024 Macy Catalyst Awards for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education

Proposals for the 2024 Macy Catalyst Awards for Transformation in Graduate Medical Education are now being accepted through September 15, 2023. Successful proposals will describe, implement and evaluate innovative strategies to equip learners with the tools, skills and strategies to flourish in graduate medical education. Six projects will be selected to receive up to $50,000 over a one-year period (2/1/2024–1/31/2025). Applications may be submitted by any resident, fellow and/or faculty member involved with graduate medical education. View more information and apply now.

AOGME Webinar Series: Webinar Recordings Available

On Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 4:00–5:00 PM ET, Shiby Abraham, MD, presented a webinar on moral injury among physicians. In this webinar, she differentiates between burnout, moral distress and moral injury, discusses the effects of moral injury in healthcare and reviews methods to prevent and address moral injury. On Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 4:00–5:00 PM ET, Louis Sanner, MD, and Kent Voorhees, MD, presented a webinar on hospital types and GME funding options. This webinar provides an in-depth discussion of hospital types and GME funding options, including examples of specific hospitals of interest to members of the audience using publicly available data. It also highlights the special opportunities for GME-naïve hospitals and the substantial long-term financial risks if residents or fellows start rotations there without informed advanced planning. Be sure to join us for several upcoming webinars of the AOGME Webinar Series. Upcoming webinar topics include the Community Nourishment Project of the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium (SWVA GMEC), the value of interpersonal skills and empathy/compassion among physicians, rural residency program development, HRSA funding for developing residencies and THCGME program status updates and more.

On Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 4:00–5:00 PM ET, Wendy Welch, PhD, Cassi Jones, DO, and Tori Makal, PhD, will present a webinar on the Community Nourishment Project, an initiative of the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium (SWVA GMEC) offering a pipeline activity for pre-med and medical students, residents and faculty to bond while learning from people living in rent-controlled housing via monthly picnics and craft interaction. On Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at 4:00–5:00 PM ET, Jordan Spencer, DO, will present a webinar on the value of interpersonal skills and their necessity for physicians in the practice of medicine. Dr. Spencer will discuss the roles of empathy/compassion and gratitude in medical practice, and he will highlight circumstances in which empathy is needed. Register for the webinar.

On Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 4:00–5:00 PM ET, Lori Rodefeld, MS, and Emily Hawes, PharmD, of the Rural Residency Development Program (RRPD) team will present a webinar on identifying prime hospitals for rural residency development based on Section 131 of the Consolidation Appropriation Act 2021. The presenters will also share considerations for GME development, as well as tools and resources to grow and support new GME program development in rural areas. Register for the webinar.

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 4:00–5:00 PM ET, Kent Voorhees, MD, and Alan Douglass, MD, will present a webinar on all aspects of rural GME development (Rural Track Programs, etc.), HRSA funding for developing residencies and THCGME program status updates (if any) and details for qualification.
