- On January 11, 2023, Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) announced the establishment of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office of Rural Health (OHR). Senators Hyde-Smith and Merkley advocated for its creation in the fiscal year 2023 omnibus spending package.
- The office will be tasked with implementing the CDC's rural health portfolio, coordinating efforts across CDC programs and developing a strategic plan for rural health at the CDC. The OHR will work to accelerate innovation, create scientific and communication resources tailored to current rural public health needs, build and improve public health functions and service delivery and provide leadership in matters of public health infrastructure.
