As the GME community switches to a new academic year, we hope you take time to pause and reflect on the past few months. During an unprecedented time, our members have cared for patients, developed new and flexible ways to deliver educational content, and adjusted to new restrictions and disruptions. We realize the challenges are far from over, and we want to offer our support. Be sure to join our next AOGME hosted peer-to-peer discussion forum on July 22 at 4:00 PM ET to discuss your experiences in the new academic year and the recruitment process for the 2021 match.
GME Updates
In response to pandemic-related issues fellowship programs may face, the Coalition for Physician Accountability issued recommendations this month for away rotations and interviews for graduate medical education fellowship applicants during the 2020-2021 academic year. You can review the recommendations here. In addition, due to the uncertainties surrounding the upcoming application and match season, the NRMP has decided to add an additional, fourth offer round to the SOAP process.
Earlier this month, AACOM released a report showing that 99.29 percent of spring 2020 graduates from colleges of osteopathic medicine seeking GME successfully placed in a GME program. The year’s placement results are particularly important because it marks the final year of the five-year transition to a single GME accreditation system, which officially concludes this month.
Move to Virtual Meetings & Conferences
AACOM announced this month that all-in person meetings are on hold until June 30, 2021, including Educating Leaders 2021, the AACOM Annual Conference, which will be held virtually. In addition, the ACGME announced their move to a virtual conference in February 2021. As much as we will miss the opportunity to connect with you in-person, we look forward to robust programming and interactive opportunities through the virtual conferences. The Joint ACGME/AOGME Pre-Conference on Osteopathic Recognition will be held virtually and for the first time launched a call for session proposals. We strongly encourage you to submit session proposal, the deadline for submission is Friday, June 26.
