  • On November 21, 2024, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced that students and families could access and submit the 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), after weeks of beta-testing the new version. A paper form is also available.
  • At the same time, Congress passed the bipartisan FAFSA Deadline ActH.R. 8932, which would deem October 1 as the FAFSA mandated launch each year. Currently, ED is required to release the FAFSA by January 1. The bill will next be presented to the President for signature.
  • While the FAFSA has typically been available by October 1, recent delays to its rollout caused concern among students, families and institutions of higher education.
