On January 30, 2024, Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Todd Young (R-IN) and Representatives Susan Wild (D-PA), Jennifer Kiggans (R-VA), Buddy Carter (R-GA) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI) introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to reauthorize the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act through fiscal year (FY) 2029. Named in honor of Dr. Lorna Breen, a physician serving on the front lines of the pandemic in New York who died by suicide in Spring 2020, the AACOM-endorsed Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act was passed in 2022. The act authorizes grant programs to help ensure healthcare organizations and health professions institutions have the necessary funding to support strategies and campaigns that prevent burnout, substance use disorders, mental health conditions and suicide.
