Happy New Year from AOGME

This month marks the anniversary of the launch of AOGME within AACOM. While integration within AACOM continues to be finalized with the election of the new board conforming to the AOGME board structure in April 2019 and other such changes, much progress has occurred over the last year. This year, we seek to focus on exciting new programs and initiatives to serve our members and the broader osteopathic medical education (OME) community.

In the first three months of 2019, we are hosting three webinars, revising bylaws for the AOGME Consortia for GME Leaders, preparing for the joint ACGME/AOGME Pre-conference Workshop for Osteopathic Programs and Institutions, and considering new programs related to leadership development for GME leaders and another on Osteopathic Recognition.

Webinars in the AOGME series include a special program specifically for AOGME members presented by AACOM’s Office of Government Relations on January 30 at 4:00 PM ET. Members will learn how to remain engaged with AACOM on leadership opportunities and advocacy on GME and other important topics relevant to osteopathic medical education. A webinar on how to build a pediatric curriculum for Osteopathic Recognition will be presented on February 6 at 4:00 PM ET, featuring Kimberly Wolf, DO, Director of Pediatric OMM at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUCOM-CA). In addition, on February 21 at 4:00 PM ET, Paul Johnson, Executive Director of the ACGME Institution Review Committee, will discuss preparing for site visits and maintaining continued accreditation. New in 2019, efforts are underway to offer AOA Continued Medical Education (CME) credit for AOGME webinars, stay tuned for updates.

The call for nominations for the 2019 AOGME Awards opened in December. These awards are an opportunity to recognize leaders in osteopathic medicine and medical education. Awardees will be formally recognized at Educating Leaders 2019, the AACOM Annual Conference. If interested, you may submit nominations for the Award of Excellence in Osteopathic Medical Education, Special Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Leadership Awards by February 6, 2019. The program planner for Educating Leaders 2019 launched this month. Several AOGME members served as reviewers of this year’s abstracts. AOGME will host several events at the conference including the Annual Membership Luncheon on Wednesday, April 10, a special luncheon for those interested in learning more about the Collegium of Fellows on April 11, and a series of programs for Residents and Fellows on Friday and Saturday (April 12-13). Encourage your residents and fellows to submit a poster abstract for a poster competition at the conference by February 8, 2019. Register for the conference today!

If you are planning to attend the ACGME Annual Educational Conference in March, be sure to join us for the Joint ACGME/AOGME pre-conference workshop on Thursday, March 7, 2019, and for a special reception following the workshop at 4:30 PM.

Finally, AACOM recently launched the UME-GME Digital Resource Library, which seeks to serve as a central repository of resources across the continuum and is currently focused on faculty development resources for programs with or seeking Osteopathic Recognition. AOGME leadership will play a lead role in developing an editorial board to maintain, review, and curate resources for the library. View the UME-GME Digital Resource Library.
