A robust physician workforce is essential to meet our nation’s growing healthcare needs, especially in rural and underserved areas. To help address the physician shortage, Representatives Terri Sewell (D-AL) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced H.R. 2389, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023. This AACOM-endorsed bill would add 14,000 Medicare-funded graduate medical education (GME) positions over seven years. H.R. 2389 gives priority to hospitals in rural and medically underserved areas, hospitals in states with new medical schools, hospitals already training over their caps, hospitals that serve Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and hospitals affiliated with historically Black medical schools. Please join the OME community in urging Congress to cosponsor and pass H.R. 2389!
