This AOGME GME Development webinar will address opportunities to grow rural and community based surgical residency programs. The webinar will focus on the current landscape, provide an overview of surgical workforce trends, benefits of rural training, GME program development and expansion options to create rural pathways, federal and state policy mechanisms to support development, practical guidance learned from two recently developed programs and available resources to support new program development.

 

Objectives:

  • Understand the current landscape of the general surgery workforce in rural and underserved settings
  • Review benefits of rural and community-based training programs
  • Discuss funding mechanisms to support program development and expansion
  • Identify case examples of rural programs that have been developed with federal and state funding
  • Review resources available to support new program development
