- On December 18, 2024, Senators Bill Cassidy, MD (R-LA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), John Cornyn (R-TX) and Michael Bennet (D-CO) released a draft bill that would create 5,000 new Medicare-supported GME slots, establish a new GME Policy Council that requires at least one DO and require the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to report on the number, specialty type, licensure type, gender, race or ethnicity and citizenship information of residents supported at federal GME programs.
- The bipartisan legislation prioritizes training primary care doctors and psychiatrists while targeting shortages in rural and underserved areas to improve access to healthcare across the country.
- This draft bill emerged from the work done by the Senate Finance Committee’s larger bipartisan GME working group after an initial legislative proposal on GME was released last summer.
- AACOM provided comments on the original proposal and has been engaging with the Senate Finance Committee on this issue.
