Preparing for Incoming Interns; Transition to Residency

This month, the 2021 residency match concluded, giving many in the graduate medical education (GME) community a much-needed pause from the recruitment and selection cycle. AOGME members discussed the outcomes of the match during the membership meeting this month, and we will continue to explore the lessons learned from virtual interviews and approaches to selecting trainees this year. To assist programs still seeking to fill residency positions or who may have positions available in the future, AACOM created a new Available Residency Positions site this month. Transition to Residency Resources

The AACOM, AAMC, ECFMG and ACGME released a toolkit this month to help fourth year medical students, colleges and residency programs prepare for the start of the new academic year. AACOM’s residency readiness resources for incoming trainees are among the various resources available. View the resources.

The AOGME Residents and Fellows Council (RFC) will present a webinar on April 5 at 7:00 PM ET on optimizing the transition from match day to PGY 1 day. In addition, AOGME will host a webinar on April 14 at 6:00 PM ET, for fourth year medical students on residency contracts with Susan Sanford, JD, Trinity Health, Resident Outreach and Provider Recruitment. AOGME Councils and Groups

The AOGME Digital Resource Library Editorial Board met this month to review resource submissions and discuss improvements to the digital resource library. We urge you to submit resources on osteopathic training, including webinars, toolkits, events and more at www.aacom.org/library.

The AOGME GME CME Learning Community met this month and encouraged sharing best practices to support engagement among Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COM), GME and CME professionals focused on educational activities on Osteopathic Principles and Practices. The group also heard presentations from the AOA, ACGME and discussed upcoming events hosted by COMs.

The AOGME Education Committee will meet on April 27 to discuss topics and content for webinars and other educational efforts. AIAMC Webinars Discount for AOGME Members

AACOM/AOGME continues to strengthen partnerships with external organizations such as the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers (AIAMC). The AIAMC is offering AOGME members exclusive member rates for upcoming webinars and events. Tune in to the AIAMC webinar on April 1 entitled, Lessons Learned from the AIAMC National Initiatives:  Teamwork, Engagement and Sustainment. AOGME Provides Inputs on GME and Transition to GME

The Coalition for Physician Accountability’s Undergraduate Medical Education to Graduate Medical Education Review Committee (UGRC) continues its efforts to review and provide recommendations on the transition to GME. The group met this month to refine recommendations that will lead to a public comment period slated for April. AOGME responded to the request for input from the UGRC on innovations or creative solutions.

In addition, the AOGME submitted feedback on AACOM’s submission to the NBOME Special Commission on COMLEX-Level 2 PE. Finally, AACOM submitted feedback on the proposed focused revisions on the ACGME common program requirements, related to protected time for program directors, program coordinators and core faculty. We thank you for submitting your feedback on the requests for feedback to help inform these responses.

Virtual Educating Leaders 2021, the AACOM Annual Conference

Although we will miss seeing everyone in person this year, Educating Leaders 2021, the AACOM Annual Conference will be held virtually April 20-22, 201. The conference will include presentations by AOGME members including Dr. Lorenzo Pence with an ACGME update; the AOGME Residents and Fellows Council (RFC) will participate in sessions on academic careers, and on the impact of COVID-19 on learners.  

In preparation for the AOGME Membership Business Meeting on May 12, 2021, 11:00am ET, we issued an electronic vote to AOGME Active Members this month for at-large members and bylaws changes. Thank you to all who submitted your vote, if you have not yet voted, please do so by Friday, April 16, 2021.
