This is a practical textbook and reference, written for the beginning to advanced intermediate student of this topic, although more experienced practitioners will also find useful information here. Based on the model developed by William G. Sutherland, DO, the book discusses the physiology and anatomy of the primary respiratory mechanism, its function in health, and changes that occur during disease processes. It provides practical exercises for developing the palpatory skills needed for this form of manipulation, along with other pertinent information such as functional anatomy, articulations, and physiologic motion of the various components of this mechanism. The book can easily be used as an accompanying text or manual for a first or second course in osteopathy in the cranial field, and some topics are useful for more advanced study. It would be especially suitable for use in a 40-hour first or second course in this topic.
The text includes clear descriptions of the osteopathic techniques for treatment of the primary respiratory system. Over one hundred drawings and photographs vividly demonstrate how to perform these techniques in the clinical setting. Other topics include principles of diagnosis and treatment, and treatment sequencing.
